Coimbra is located at the centre of Portugal by the river Mondego. Having a rich cultural and historical patrimony, the city has been called the ‘city of students’ due to the relevant role of the University of Coimbra. The University is located in three key campuses in Coimbra, named Polo I, Polo II (engineering departments) and Polo III (health campus). Polo I is in the heart of the town’s historical site. Dating back to 1290, the University of Coimbra is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest in Portugal. It now comprises eight faculties. The University of Coimbra has been inscribed by UNESCO in the World Heritage List.
